    Thank you all for making this year's Integration Bee a resounding success! We'd like to congratulate the winners. In the undergraduate competition Carol (Ka Lai) Yuen placed first, with Vitaly Katsnelson coming in second. Last year's Math Club president, Will Garner, and Matthew Sudano from the Physics Department tied for the Graduate competition. We'd also like to thank everyone who participated. Pictures from the Integration Bee will be posted shortly.

  • 2007-2008 Officer Nominations posted May 4, 2007 at 4:33 a.m.

    Interested in becoming an officer? Know someone who would be up for the job? We're calling for your officer nominations for the next academic year. To nominate a candidate, send an email to mathclub@math.ucsd.edu with the following information:

    • name of your nominee (must be a UCSD undergraduate for the academic year 07-08)
    • position for which they are qualified (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, PR)

    Also, the Integration Bee is next Thursday at 12:30 in the Calculus Lab, AP&M B402A

  • Spring Quarter Events posted April 21, 2007 at 5:13 a.m.

    Our annual Integration Bee will be held on May 10th at 12:30 p.m. It will be composed of two rounds. The first round is open to undergraduates only. The second round is open to both undergrads and graduate students. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each round.

    Back by popular demand is our Graduate Seminar. If you're thinking about pursuing post-graduate education in mathematics, then don't miss this event. Hear advice from graduate students who were once in your shoes. Find out what you need to do in order to make it into a grad program.

    Finally, as the academic year comes to a close we will be honoring all the math students who are graduating with a celebration to be held at the end of the quarter. Students who are or have graduated this year will be invited, so check your inboxes for notifications within the next few weeks.

    We'll be having our first general body meeting of the quarter this Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. For this week only it will be held in AP&M B412. We will meet in AP&M 6218 for all other meetings.

    Welcome back to another academic year. We'll be having our first General Body Meeting This Monday at 3:30 p.m. in AP&M 5218, so join us and give us your input.

    Also, if you're interested in participating in the Putnam Exam, contact Jeff Rabin, the Math Department's Putnam Exam advisor this quarter. He is holding weekly problem solving practice sessions for students interested in taking the exam, which will be given December 2. The registration deadline is coming up soon, so please act quickly.

    Congratulations are in order for the winners of this year's Integration Bee. For the undergraduate competition, Zhang Sheng Lian finished in first, Zixuan Hu second and Jonathan Kommemi and Vladimir Asriyan tied for third. For the open competition, Kevin Costello finished first, followed by Steven Butler in second place. The winners received gift vouchers to Round Table Pizza and Jamba Juice. We'd like to thank everyone who participated in or attended the event, as well as Professors Eggers and Arnold for their judging.

    The Undergraduate Journal at UCSD is currently looking for undergraduates to submit their research papers for publication in their journal. They seek to be a nationally distributed and nationally recognized undergraduate journal. It is to be a medium for undergraduate students to share their ideas with each other as well as with the national academic community.

    Dr. Kelly who works for the NSA (National Security Agency) is presenting a talk on Monday 27, 2006 from 7-8 p.m. The title of his talk is, "How to Earn $620: An unsolved problem in computational number theory." The target audience is undergraduate math majors, though the talk will be accessible to graduate students and to eager high school students. See the Events page for more information.
